SRK v BSI - 14 May 2005

Team:  Andy Sami, JP Duc (Chris Link 40), Lewis Eaton, Paul Browne (Svein Meling 40), Eric Claudey (Xavier Cau 40), Christophe de Lesquen (Mark Andrew 40), Charles Bromley Gardner (Sean Greater 60), Kristoffer Borsheim, Will Bickford (Johan Skavland 40), Dave Ukich (Mike McNeil 40), Steve Slater, Simon Perry, Geir Isaksen (Kevin Graeter 40), Johan Skavland (Alex Scillitani 40), Arnaud Vivet.

Result:   SRK 41 - BSI 12

Scorers:  Arnaud Vivet: 3 Tries; Steve Slater: 1 Try; John Skavland: 1 Try; Alex Scillitani: 1 Try(?).  Who claims the other one??  Dave Ukich: 3 conversions.

An excellent turnout on a sunny afternoon, and we also provided some reserves to BSI.  Everyone played at least 20 minutes (except those sent off) and most for 40 minutes.  Following a competitive Under 17 7s fixture between SRK Juniors and ISS Green Goats, the seniors took the game to BSI from the whistle.  The pack made things harder than necessary to cross the BSI line, but were soon shown the way by penetrating runs from the backs.  Arnaud Vivet particularly came into the line from Full Back most effectively and jinked his way to 3 Tries on his debut for SRK!  About 31-0 up at half-time there was a mass replacement from the bench.  As could be expected we were less effective in the second half, but valuable experience was gained.  Noticeable was how well the younger players are progressing and Mike and JP were congratulated for their development work.

The low point of the match came in the last 10 minutes when BSI crossed our line twice, due to disciplinary lapses reducing SRK to 13 players.  The whole team must learn to accept that the referee can only play what he sees with one pair of eyes; cutting out the appeals and back-chat will make the game far more enjoyable for all and, what's more, we will play better.  We must also learn not to misconduct quite so openly

.Anyway, a good start to the season with much promise to come, although we will be losing some valuable players in mid-season.  Many thanks to JP and ISS for marking the pitch - and to JP for the fine chicken curry in the klubbhus in the evening.  Steve Slater was named Man of the Match.

Bergen 7s - 16 April 2005

Team:  Charles Bromley Gardner, Steve Slater, Brikt Apeland (J), Mike McNeil, Will Bickford, Johan Skavland (J), Simon Perry, Kristoffer Borsheim (J), Alex Bickford, Øyvind Knaben (J), Sigbjørn Langerud, Kim Lunde (J).

Results:  v BRK2 28-14 & 21-5; v ECB 14-17 & 0-17. SF v BRK 0-22. (BRK won the final 43-0 over ECB).

Scorers:  Kristoffer: 4 Tries, 9 Conversions (NO misses!). Simon: 2 Tries. Johan, Alex & Will: 1 Try each.

A full team bolstered by 5 juniors travelled up to Bergen setting off at 0500 hrs!  Finding ourselves in a League of only 3 teams, we played the other 2 teams twice, the second time being 4 minutes each way - it was quite long enough!  It was difficult to give everyone a fair time on the pitch, so 12 was really a few too many players - but we had failed, just, to put two teams together.  We gave ECB a very close game in the first encounter and the one try eventually became the difference between playing BRK in the Semi-Final rather than the Final.

The Juniors won their Tournament conclusively (Kristoffer was Best Junior Player, surprise, surprise) and the Ladies had three good games against Bergen, but could not beat them.

JuniorsKristoffer Borsheim, Brikt Apeland, Johan Skavland, Øyvind Knaben, Kim Lunde, Pål Skavland, Trym Øien, Guy Gibbs, Espen B Olsen.

Ladies:   Bente Ottestad, Mari Oustebø, Thea Ovregaard, Daria Hinz, Berit Eggebo Naess.

2004 National 15s League 3rd Place Playoff – 16 October 2004

SRK LADS TAKE THE DAY!

After an early Saturday departure we finalised the team over breakfast provided by JP on the Mortavika-Arsvågen ferry - slightly weaker than we had planned and hoped for (the team that is, not the breakfast), but at least we had a couple of reserves (there was plenty of breakfast) and everyone could play in the position allocated. Every decade of age was represented, from teenagers through to the feisty fifties.

We squeezed onto the boat at Sandvikvåg - just arriving with seconds to spare, if that - and navigated in convoy through the back-streets to find the pitch beside Brann Stadium - except for Mike, who had to be talked in by mobile phone!  But we were all there in good time to get over the 5-hour journey and to start working on drills and calls - and adjusting Alex Knight's clothing so that he wouldn't turn into a castrati when being lifted in the line-outs.  Francois took his shower before the game - and will learn to read the full description on any cream he uses on sensitive skin; a pity that Ring of Fire did not feature on the post-game song sheet.

As two o'clock drew near, so did the traditional west coast weather and the whole game was littered with handling errors in the blustery showers.  But the first half mostly definitely belonged to Stavanger and BSI hardly threatened to score at all.  Even though we knocked on both of their kick-offs we quickly got back into their half with no trouble.  A couple of penalties were missed, one converted by Dave and then first Mike (44 years old) under the posts and Alex Bickford (18) on the left wing touched down.  At half time we turned round to face into the weather 15-0 to the good.

I'm not really sure what then happened, but BSI exploited errors and had the run of the game for the next 25 minutes.  Nothing seemed to go right for Stavanger; there was no sense that we let the foot off the pump, but perhaps we grew over-confident in spite of Dave's half-time talk and became careless in handling and also fell foul of the referee.  Anyway at that stage we had seen nothing of BSI's half and had fallen behind 15-17 to two converted tries and a penalty.  For the last 10 minutes we had defended our line stoutly and then suddenly, for no apparent reason, we turned the pressure back on them.  The pressure turned into a penalty, which put our noses just in front. 3 minutes to go and Will called a blind move from a 5m scrum. For the last 3m Adam slid under the desperate BSI defence to touch the line with the ball and score in the left corner.  Finally the Club President could raise his voice above the silenced BSI spectators!  A very difficult conversion attempt was not successful, so BSI could still win it with a converted try.  Unable to get into our 22m with the ball in hand, their last attempt was yet another kick over the top.  The cover was in place and shadowed the ball as it gently rolled over the dead-ball line.

The final whistle blew and Stavanger's ecstasy and relief was all too evident.  We felt that we had so nearly thrown it away - BSI will undoubtedly feel that it was their good work rather than our failings - that the pleasure of retrieving the situation in this Cup Match was certainly heightened.  Overall we deserved the victory, but it was a damn close run thing.  And without the youth in the team it would not have been possible - 7 of the team were 17 or 18 years old (and why was the name Alex/Alexander so popular in 1986 and 1987?).  It was a bloody good celebration in The Scotsman that evening, for which BSI are to be graciously thanked for their excellent hospitality and bar-games (but JP and Francois led the singing!).

Team: Lewis Eaton; Brigt Apeland; JP Duc; Paul Browne, Charles Bromley Gardner; Francois Hanzel; Kristoffer Borsheim; Alex Knight; Alexander Husoy; Will Bickford; Dave Ukich; Mike McNeil; Johan Skavland; Alex Bickford; Christophe de Lesquen; Adam Hutchinson; Dave Warren.

7s v HMS Chiddingfold - 25 September 2004

We rolled up to the navy base at Hundvåg to find the English lads warmed up and rearing to go on the newly prepared field, luckily found by Charles after the ISS pitch became water-logged. We had just enough for 3 teams of 7's, so off we went in a round-robin series. A great mix of experience and youth throughout all 3 teams which resulted in some great rugby during the day. Best quote of the day: "hitting that Lewis guy was like hitting a tree"!

ONS Rugby Match - 25 August 2004

A great match in the rain at Midjord stadium on a Wednesday evening!  A couple of visiting players, but otherise the Klubb turned out two 15s teams.  Rogaland Avis attended and gave a full 2 page spread on the match. Trondheim 7s Tournament - 21 August 2004

A great weekend had by all, and a well deserved 4th placing achieved.

We left on early Saturday morning and arrived in Trondheim around 12 after a plane trip via Bergen and Ålesund. After a bit of a walk we arrived at the grounds to be greeted by a Bergen team decked out with pads, gloves and black paint stripes under the eyes. After being told we were on in 5 minutes, we quickly dressed, warmed up then took on our first opponents, Trondheim, who we beat. Our next game was against ECB: we drew 21-21 in a very hard fought match with the young fellas showing a lot of talent. Up next was the Kings Cross team, a 3rd team of Trondheim, whom we beat convincingly and advanced to the semi-final against Bergen.  We managed to cross the line in the first 5 minutes thanks to Alex but were unable to ground it, never mind...they were on the back foot.  However they regained their confidence and ended up scoring in the first half; in the second half it was a much better performance by all of us but not enough as Bergen took it out, and as a consolation Kristoffer scored in the corner on the final whistle so we finished on a high note. Good on all of you guys that made it up, I think we done Stavanger Rugby Klubb proud.

Team: Andy Sami; Svein Meling; JP Duc; Charles Bromley Gardner; Will Bickford; Steve Slater; Alex Scillitani; Christophe de Lesquen; Adam Hutchinson.

(Missing: 1 large tent, last seen walking towards Trondheim city centre).
