COPENHAGEN 7'S 20056th of Augustby Hamish Esplin
BRK claims 1st International trophy
After years of sending teams only to come home empty handed, the BRK men
finally managed to bring some silverware home after lifting the bowl (which
looks suspiciously like a cup) at this year's Scandinavian 7s in Copenhagen.
With two teams in our pool not showing up we were left with just two games
on the Saturday. In both games we were within one try of a hard-fought
victory with one minute left only to eventually succumb to foreign rivals.
The first match ending 35-24 to Eagels RFC and the second 22-14 to SC
Frankfurt 1880. One particular highlight was Willie's wonderful cover
defense of one opponent only to give up a metre short of making a try-saving
tackle because he heard a whistle of some sort somewhere in Copenhagen.
Feeling fresh after an early night, BRK safely dispatched Hamburg RC 'B'
38-5 before running away with the final in an entertaining end to the
weekend by soundly defeating host club RK Speed 41-14. Once again we decided
to play our best rugby toward the end of the tournament with second half
tries directly from our own kick-offs being a highlight. Hanro van Pølse's
conversion attempts were undoubtedly the lowlight, needless to say serious
thought must be given to never letting this bad-haired jaapie score a try
again for fear he will try and convert it himself.
In the women's competition the BRK girls (combined with a few girls from
other Norwegian clubs) played four games which they all lost but by less and
less as the tournament went on, going down 29-0 to a strong Dutch side.
