60-0
September the
11th

by Number 22
For the second
week in a row, a bunch of the "sorry-looking Viking invaders"
ventured out of Bergen. This time the target was Trondheim and despite
lacking their full strength team, in fact lacking an entire team at all,
confidence was clearly high. "I'll take on the scrumhalf, stand-off
and both centres myself!" declared the once pacey number 9 ",
let's get the beers in now!" ?"and a Guinness for me!"
The sun shone
as promised on the Saturday, although unfortunately the farmer had not
kept his part of the bargain and cut the grass on the field. While the
Trondheim boys manfully tried to mark the pitch, the Bergen boys discussed
tactics to make 11 players look like 15. Options include make Franny run
around so much he covers the ground of the entire back three, use S-J
as both a prop and a no10 (ditto Herve, hooker/flanker/centre) and secretly
pay off the ref to be an extra Bergen player.
The game
started on time and Bergen were soon on attack and despite some frenetic
tackling, Francis squeezed in the corner for a try after 2 minutes. This
set the tone for the first half with the backs using the ball intelligently,
running from deep and utilising their forwards as necessary to score a
good cushion of points before the half time whistle.
NTNUI were
given a strong talking to at half time and came out stronger keeping the
ball in hand. The Bergen forwards in particular seemed uninterested and
NTNUI made some good yardage through their pack, especially their stocky
hooker. Definitely an area for improvement over the next week or so! Other
perennial area that need improvement are the ball presentation and clearing
out of rucks ? too many forwards just leaning at the back of rucks. Despite
the improved performance by NTNUI, Bergen held tight and kept them scoreless
while adding to their points total of the 1st half and an impressive final
score of 60 - 0.
In all a
very mixed game with some good play and some lousy play! A particular
highlight for me was the constant cry of the flimsy-tackling Ginger no
10 (No Hamish, it wasn't you?) of "take it up" to the man in
possession. The result inevitably had the person either run sideways (or
backwards) away from contact and look to pass the ball, preferably to
the most improbably person! ? Who says all the touch we play hasn't given
us good habits?
Other more
amusing highlights had Hanro redefining offside laws at rucks, Stian being
penalised for picking up and carrying the ball carrier, Sandrévrine
taking over as touch judge and immediately stopping a Bergen try by calling
a player in touch, then asking where the touchline was due to the faint
markings! Also worthy of a mention were Svein-Jarle's first 2 tries in
a XV's game (INCLUDING one conversion), one of which involved pace and
a step any of our backs would have been proud of, and Vidar's interception
and overhead pass for a try for Stian.
Evening entertainment
was down in the cellars at the studentby and involved in no particular
order, excellent food (thanks Sev), singing competitions, a few bottles
of beer and a variety of ancient South African torture techniques using
among other things, wooden spoons, bottle tops and guitar strings??
